Disinformation has always been a tool of influence, but AI has turned it into a precision weapon. What used to take coordinated propaganda machines and thousands of humans now takes a single operator with access to a generative AI model and a decent graphics card. The result? Information warfare that is faster, cheaper, more believable—and far more dangerous: Welcome to the synthetic battlefield.
From Human Troll Farms to Autonomous Propaganda Engines

Disinformation campaigns involved real people, historically: troll farms churning out propaganda, coordinated botnets pushing narratives, and state actors scripting events with care. Now, AI can generate fake news, fake people, and fake public opinion at industrial scale, all without breaking a sweat.
Large language models and deepfake generators are being weaponised to:
Write news articles that look legitimate but are entirely false
Mimic the voices and styles of trusted figures
Generate convincing social media engagement to manipulate algorithms
Saturate discourse with subtle but coordinated lies
This isn’t about changing minds. It’s about overwhelming them. Confusion, not persuasion, is the point.

Russia, China, and other state actors are already integrating AI into their disinformation arsenals. Russia’s long-running narrative operations have truly evolved, blending traditional media manipulation with AI-generated personas and synthetic commentary. China’s “Spamouflage” campaigns automate content flooding in multiple languages, targeting dissent and skewing global perception.
The danger isn’t just from foreign interference, the barrier to entry is now so low that anyone can play this game.

Social Media as the Attack Vector: Amplification on Autopilot
AI-powered disinformation needs a host, and social media delivers. Algorithms designed to maximise engagement are easy to hijack. A well-crafted AI-generated post, injected into the right current of outrage or fear, can go viral before any human moderator even sees it.
What’s worse: the platforms often don’t know who or what is posting. Synthetic identities look exactly like real users, and can be very hard to detect, unless you’re looking closely, and most systems aren’t.

Why Detection Is Losing the Race
Forget manual fact-checking, it’s reactive, slow, and usually too late. AI-generated content contains just enough truth to evade detection but enough manipulation to do damage. Even advanced detection tools are struggling to keep up as adversaries train their models specifically to bypass them.
The reality of this type of campaign: once trust erodes, even real information looks suspicious. People stop believing anything. Mission accomplished.
Reclaiming Trust: Identity as Infrastructure
This is where we stop playing whack-a-mole with content and start thinking structurally. The core problem isn’t just what’s being said, it’s who’s saying it and whether they even exist.
Technologies like PrivID don’t try to moderate speech—they create a way to verify that the speaker is human and unique, using cryptographic techniques like ZKPs and FHE. This means platforms can distinguish between genuine users and AI-driven fake personas, without compromising user privacy.
It’s a trust layer, not a surveillance tool. Anonymity stays intact. But manipulation at scale? That gets much, much harder.
What Needs to Happen Next
AI-driven disinformation is only going to become more sophisticated. Detection will never be enough on its own. We need:
Verified-but-private identity infrastructure
Platform accountability for synthetic amplification
International standards for digital authenticity and provenance
Public awareness of what’s real, what’s fake, and what’s deliberately confusing
Because if we don’t fix this, the loudest algorithm wins—and the idea of shared reality collapses with it.
